There are three main classifications of malocclusion, Class I, Class II, and Class III malocclusion. This classification is based on the front-to-back relationship of the upper jaw to the lower jaw, and more specifically the relationship of the upper 1st molar to the lower 1st molar.

Class I malocclusion
From a front-to-back standpoint this is considered a normal relationship. The teeth, however, can still be crowded, in cross bite, rotated, in deep bite or open bite.

Class II malocclusion
From a front-to-back standpoint the lower jaw is in a retrusive (back) position relative to the upper jaw. This gives the appearance of a smaller chin, a large overjet, and bucked teeth.

Class III malocclusion
From a front-to-back standpoint the lower jaw is in a protrusive (forward) position relative to the upper jaw. This gives the appearance of a very strong chin, or a dished in look of the upper lip.
