When the lower jaw is retrusive (back) relative to the upper jaw we sometimes use an appliance called the Herbst appliance to encourage jaw growth by positioning the lower jaw forward.

When the lower jaw is brought forward it brings the condyle (jaw joint) out of the fossa creating a "vacuum". Nature does not like a vacuum and this encourages bone growth on the condyle in a backward direction thereby lengthening the jaw.

Sometimes the rod & tube can come apart. When this occurs you can put them back together in the same way they came apart.
