The American Association of Orthodontists recommends the orthodontist see children by age 7 to advise if orthodontic treatment is required, or to determine the best time for the patient to be treated.

Usually we will watch your child grow up. Normally the optimal time for treatment is when kids are hitting their growth spurt, which in females is 10.5-11 years, while in males it is 11-11.5 years old. Timing at these ages allows us to use orthodontic mechanics to guide growth in a favorable direction.

Occasionally we will start some type of early treatment only if there is an underlying skeletal problem. Such problems include narrow arch widths, spacing problems, deep bite tendencies, and open bite tendencies. Generally, our office is more conservative, and will only intervene early when it is necessary. At the intitial examination Dr. Engen will be able to determine if any early treatment is necessary for your child.
